Course Description:  Western Encounters with India (C/LA 496A/596A) is a team-taught interdisciplinary course for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The class explores interactions between the Indian subcontinent and Britain from the eighteenth century to the present. Using primary source materials, novels and drama, and scholarly monographs, the course focuses on political, economic, cultural, and religious contact between the two continents from the early outposts of the British East India Company to contemporary globalization.
The fall course will be followed by a three-week study abroad course in India (C/LA 496B/596B) during the 2018 Winter Session. Students are urged, but not at all required, to enroll in both semesters of the course—but students who take C/LA 496A/596A are guaranteed a place in the winter session course. Potential destinations for the trip include Delhi, Lucknow, Goa, Hampi, and Bangalore.
At least one of the two courses can count for a range of requirements in the History and English majors and graduate programs.

This is a CSULB short-term, faculty-led study abroad course.
