Course Description: Abnormal Psychology is an upper-division course that provides an overview of the basic phenomena and principles of abnormal psychology and an introduction to the description, etiology, and treatment of various psychological disorders. A supplemental goal is to help students, psychology and non-psychology majors, develop mental health literacy needed to be smart consumers of mental health services. For the summer study abroad program, these topics will be examined from an international perspective, and the course will include several academic field trips to local organizations who are working to address these issues in the Rhineland area. This course will also include field trips to the European Union Parliament where students will learn about the EU’s approach to addressing the mental health needs of migrant workers and refugees, and the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands where the students will learn about the international response to their plight.
Additional excursions include visits to local castles, palaces, and cathedrals; bike riding and rafting along the Rhine River; hiking through vineyards in the Ahr Valley; and city tours of Bonn, Amsterdam, and Strasbourg.
