Course Description: Long hailed as one of the more progressive countries in the world, the Netherlands provides a sharp contrast to the United States in its approach to corrections.  This will be a tremendous learning opportunity for students eager to explore comparative perspectives in criminal justice.  While stateside, we will examine themes such as US drug policy, gun access, mass incarceration, prisoner reentry, and “Stop, Question, and Frisk” policing.  Upon arrival to the Netherlands, we will look into some of the key differences in the Dutch approach, as well as some of the issues facing policymakers there.  Students will have the opportunity to learn about the nuances of Dutch drug policy from experts in the field, see a presentation from the “Young in Prison International” organization, take a visit to a Dutch jail/prison and a reentry program, make a trip to the Prison Museum, as well as observe proceedings at the International Criminal Court (in the Hague).
